Delta Junction, Alaska — The Delta Junction community and the wider fire service family are honoring the life of Daniel Rawson, a respected U.S. Navy Battalion Chief and longtime firefighter whose passing on December 14 has left a deep and lasting impact on all who knew him.

Daniel was admired for the way he carried himself both in uniform and in everyday life. Those closest to him say his strength came from two places he held above all else—his faith and his family. Friends recall that he spoke often about his belief as the foundation that guided his choices, his leadership, and his compassion for others.

That spirit was on full display during The Crucible 2, a demanding endurance and mindset challenge within the Fit To Fight Fire community. Daniel traveled from Spain to take part, explaining that he wanted to train alongside firefighters who were willing to push themselves with purpose. Even after long hours of intense physical effort, he remained upbeat and thankful, expressing gratitude for the ability to challenge his body and mind.

One moment shared by fellow participant Mike Lawton has resonated strongly since Daniel’s passing.

“During one of the workouts, Dan showed me a photo of his family that he kept inside his helmet,” Lawton recalled. “It said everything about what drove him.”

Daniel’s career reflected years of dedication to service. He served as a Battalion Chief with the U.S. Navy, and previously held leadership and emergency response roles as a Fire Captain at Eielson Air Force Base and a Firefighter/EMT with the Fort Greely Fire Department. Colleagues describe him as steady, encouraging, and deeply committed to those he led.

He studied at Central Texas College, made his home in Delta Junction, and was originally from Yucaipa, California. Above all, Daniel was a husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Vielma Rawson, and their three daughters—Gianna, 15; London, 13; and Azara, 9—who were the center of his life and the pride he carried with him wherever he went.

Since the news of his passing, messages of remembrance and prayer have poured in from across the fire service and fitness communities. Many have spoken of Daniel’s kindness, his calm leadership, and the way he quietly inspired others through action rather than words.

As loved ones continue to grieve, the community has come together to support Daniel’s family and to honor the values he lived by—faith, service, resilience, and love.
