TACOMA, Wash. — The Washington State Patrol is remembering Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting, whose life and service are being honored following a line-of-duty incident Friday evening in Tacoma.
Trooper Guting was assisting with an earlier roadway collision along State Route 509 when she was struck by a passing vehicle near the Port of Tacoma. Despite immediate efforts by those on scene, she later passed away from her injuries. The Tacoma Police Department is overseeing the investigation.
At just 29 years old, Trooper Guting had recently begun her career with the Washington State Patrol, joining as a cadet earlier in the year before earning her commission in October. She was assigned to District 1, where colleagues describe her as dedicated, disciplined, and deeply committed to public service.
Her passing marks the 34th time in the agency’s long history that a trooper has been lost while serving the public — a loss felt across the state and beyond.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Guting’s path to service began early. After graduating from Mililani High School, she enlisted in the Army National Guard, where she served for eight years as a signals intelligence specialist before transitioning to civilian life and law enforcement.
She is survived by her husband, Timothy, a fellow public servant, along with her family, friends, and colleagues who now mourn her passing.
Leaders within the Washington State Patrol say her legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the service she gave.
