BONDI BEACH, Sydney — Australian authorities are investigating a serious incident near Bondi Beach after a disturbance disrupted a Jewish holiday gathering on Sunday evening, prompting a large emergency response and sending crowds fleeing from the area.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. along Campbell Parade, near the Bondi Pavilion, where a community event known as Chanukah by the Sea was taking place. The gathering had been promoted as a family-friendly celebration and was attended by adults and children.

Witnesses reported that two men exited a vehicle near the busy beachfront area, after which loud popping sounds were heard. People nearby described scenes of panic as beachgoers, residents, and tourists ran for safety along the promenade and into surrounding streets and businesses.

Images and video circulating on social media appear to show one individual positioned on an elevated structure near the beachfront. Authorities have not verified all footage publicly but confirmed they are reviewing digital evidence as part of the investigation.

At this time, officials have not confirmed the number of people injured or whether there were any fatalities. While some eyewitnesses have claimed multiple casualties, police have urged the public to avoid speculation until verified information is released.

New South Wales Police confirmed Sunday night that two men are in custody in connection with the incident. Investigators have not released the identities of those detained or detailed what role each may have played. No motive has been confirmed.

In a public statement, NSW Police urged residents and visitors to stay away from the area while officers secured the scene and conducted inquiries.

“Police are responding to a developing incident at Bondi Beach and are urging the public to avoid the area,” the statement said.

Authorities also addressed reports circulating online suggesting a second related incident at a Hanukkah gathering in Dover Heights, clarifying that those reports are false and that no additional incidents have been confirmed.

Emergency services were deployed across the area, including police units and paramedics. Streets surrounding the beachfront were temporarily restricted as officers worked to ensure public safety and assist those affected.

Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and that further updates will be provided as confirmed information becomes available. Members of the public who were in the area at the time of the incident or who may have recorded video or witnessed events firsthand are encouraged to contact NSW Police.

Community leaders expressed concern for families who attended the holiday gathering expecting a peaceful evening and praised first responders for their swift action.

This remains a developing story.
