Meadows of Dan, VA — The community is mourning the sudden and peaceful passing of Mrs. Evona Lula Helms, affectionately known as “Mountain Grandma,” who died at her home on December 1, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on January 17, 1940, in Floyd County, Evona’s life was marked by love, dedication, and a remarkable commitment to her family and community. Though she did not move mountains in the literal sense, she cared for her part of the mountain with devotion, creating a life filled with beauty, warmth, and generosity.
Evona was known for her tireless dedication as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She spent her life nurturing and supporting her loved ones, always offering kindness, comfort, and a guiding hand. Her presence brought light to the lives of everyone she met, leaving a lasting impact on her family, friends, and neighbors. Her home and her heart were always open, and she built a legacy of love that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lula Belcher Harris and Marvin J. Harris, her husband, Coy R. Helms, her brother, Dale Harris, her grandson, Justin R. Helms, and her great-grandson, Dalton L. Derrow. Despite this profound loss, Evona’s family and community celebrate her life and the extraordinary imprint she left on those around her.
Evona’s family and friends are invited to a funeral service at Conners View Primitive Baptist Church, located at 3408 Mountain View Road, Meadows of Dan, on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Elder Tim McGrady officiating. Burial will follow immediately in the church cemetery. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Conners View Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the Glaucoma Research Foundation, reflecting Evona’s lifelong commitment to community and charitable causes.
