A stretch of the Maine Turnpike near mile marker 5 fell silent Monday afternoon as investigators worked to understand the sudden loss of 81-year-old Janice Goldsmith of Needham, Massachusetts, whose life ended in an unexpected collision that has left authorities searching for answers.
State police say the incident unfolded just after 3:14 p.m., when Goldsmith’s 2014 Toyota sedan was traveling southbound at an estimated 65 miles per hour. For reasons still unknown, her vehicle veered from the main travel lane and struck the rear of a fully disabled 2022 Western Star tractor-trailer stopped in the breakdown lane.
Investigators confirmed that the truck had been properly secured: hazard lights activated, three reflective emergency triangles placed behind it, and the driver following all required safety procedures. Yet, despite these precautions, the sedan showed no skid marks, no braking signs, and no evidence of evasive action before impact.
First responders arrived swiftly, but Goldsmith was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.
The highway remained closed for more than five hours as reconstruction teams documented debris patterns, measured distances, reviewed visibility conditions, and began analyzing data from both vehicles. Authorities say they are considering a range of factors — including possible medical complications, distraction, road conditions, or other sudden issues — but emphasize that no official cause has been determined.
Those who knew Janice describe her as a gentle, thoughtful woman whose presence brought warmth to those around her. Her loss has reached beyond her hometown of Needham and into the communities of York, where the tragic scene unfolded.
Our deepest condolences go to the family of Janice Goldsmith as they navigate this painful loss.
