TUCSON, Ariz. — The Tucson community is mourning the tragic loss of 33-year-old Oscar Pedro Salazar, who passed away following a severe traffic incident on Sunday afternoon. The Tucson Police Department (TPD) formally identified Salazar as the individual involved, confirming details on Monday as investigators continue their work.

According to authorities, TPD’s Operations Division South officers were called to the area of South Sixth Avenue and East Michigan Drive around 3 p.m. on December 7 after receiving multiple reports of a collision involving significant injuries. When first responders arrived, they found Salazar, the driver of a Hyundai Elantra, critically injured. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Early findings from witness accounts and evidence gathered by detectives indicate that Salazar had been traveling eastbound on Michigan Drive, approaching the intersection. Investigators say he proceeded from a stop sign when his vehicle was struck by a northbound Ford Mustang traveling on Sixth Avenue. The driver of the Mustang, who was not injured, remained on the scene and cooperated fully with officers.

TPD noted that the Mustang was traveling above the posted speed limit, and while speed has been identified as the primary contributing factor, impairment was not suspected. Officers conducted a full evaluation at the scene and found no signs of alcohol or drug involvement.

Traffic detectives continue to analyze evidence, including roadway markings, vehicle damage, speed calculations, and witness statements. As of now, no charges or citations have been issued, and the investigation remains open.
