Wabash, IN — The Wabash community is mourning the loss of Tonie M. Baer, a dedicated public servant, proud veteran, and beloved member of the community, who passed away at 4:50 a.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was 78 years old.

Born on August 17, 1947, to Edward “Eddie” and Thelma (Sands) Baer in Wabash, Tonie lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep commitment to his community. A graduate of Northfield High School, he went on to serve in the United States Army as a Clerical Specialist, proudly contributing to his country before returning home to build a life of service locally.

Tonie devoted 24 years to the Wabash City Fire Department, serving from September 1969 until his retirement in September 1993. His commitment to the safety and well-being of his community left a lasting legacy. Beyond his work as a firefighter, Tonie was a passionate entrepreneur, owning Baer’s Cycle World in Wabash, where he shared his love for motorcycles and outdoor adventure with friends and neighbors.

Tonie is survived by his four nieces—Lisa (Scott) Hearn and Angie Baer-DeLauter of Wabash, and Cinda Baer and Susan Baer of Texas—as well as eight great-nieces and nephews, including Blake (Hayley) Hearn, Caitlin Hearn, Miles Hearn, Phoebe (Ian Ogden) Hearn, Reese (Layne) DeLauter, Sterling (Blake Peterson) DeLauter, Seth Baer, and Reid Baer. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ted Baer and Todd Baer.

Funeral services for Tonie will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at McDonald Funeral Home, Wabash Chapel, located at 231 Falls Avenue, Wabash, with Pastor Brad Wright officiating. Private family graveside services will follow at Gardens of Memory in Marion. Friends and family are invited to visit from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the service at the funeral home.

In honor of Tonie’s life and passions, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wabash County Animal Shelter, located at 810 Manchester Ave, Wabash, Indiana 46992.

Tonie M. Baer’s life will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his commitment to family, and his contributions to the Wabash community. He leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and devotion that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
