What should have been an ordinary morning instead became a moment of tragedy that forever changed the lives of those connected to them.

According to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, Moore and Jones were the two people who lost their lives inside the apartment. Pittsburgh Police were called to the 100 block of Hazlett Street shortly after 9 a.m. after ShotSpotter detected two rounds. As officers were responding, additional 911 calls were received reporting a shooting inside an apartment.

When police arrived, officers discovered Moore and Jones on the second floor of one of the units. Investigators later located multiple shell casings inside the apartment, along with damage suggesting that some shots had been fired outside before the situation moved indoors.

The circumstances surrounding what happened remain under investigation. Witnesses reported that there may have been some type of domestic incident before the shooting, but authorities have not released details regarding the relationship between Moore and Jones or explained what led to the tragic events. Investigators have also not publicly identified who fired the shots. Their causes and manners of death had not yet been released at the time of the report.

Perhaps among the most heartbreaking aspects of this tragedy is that four children—ages 11, 9, 7, and 7—were inside the apartment when the incident occurred. Thankfully, the children were not physically injured. They were taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital as a precaution and are expected to undergo forensic interviews as investigators work to understand everything that occurred.

Police have not disclosed how the children were connected to Moore or Jones, and out of respect for their privacy and well-being, their identities have not been released.

Although the children escaped physical injury, the emotional impact of witnessing or being present during such a frightening event can be profound. Their presence serves as a painful reminder that tragedy can affect far more people than those whose names appear in official reports. Families, loved ones, caregivers, teachers, neighbors, and an entire community may now be called upon to provide comfort and support during an extraordinarily difficult time.

No other injuries were reported, and authorities said there was no continuing threat to the public. Still, for the residents of Northview Heights, the sense of safety that comes with home and community has been deeply shaken.

Shaelynn and Mark were more than names connected to a tragic investigation. They were people with lives, memories, relationships, hopes, and people who cared about them. Behind every loss are families and friends who must now face the painful reality of someone they loved no longer being there.

At this difficult moment, it is important to remember them with compassion and dignity. While investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding their deaths, their families are left to grieve privately and begin navigating the days ahead without their loved ones.

May the memories of Shaelynn Maria Moore and Mark Allen Jones remain with everyone who knew and loved them. May their families find strength during the days ahead, and may the children who were present receive the care, protection, and support they need as they process what happened.

The Northview Heights community is grieving not only two lives lost, but also the pain and uncertainty that follows such a devastating event. In moments like this, compassion matters. Support matters. Checking on one another matters.

As the investigation continues, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, loved ones, the four children, and everyone in the Northview Heights community affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.

May Shaelynn Maria Moore and Mark Allen Jones rest in peace. May their memories be a blessing to those who loved them, and may their families find comfort and strength in the days ahead.

🕊️ In loving memory of Shaelynn Maria Moore and Mark Allen Jones.
💜 Gone from this world, but never forgotten.
💔 Our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.

In Loving Memory of Shaelynn Maria Moore and Mark Allen Jones 💜💔 With profound sadness, we remember Shaelynn Maria Moore, 30, of Brighton Heights, and Mark Allen Jones, 24, of Northview Heights, whose lives came to a heartbreaking end Wednesday morning in a shooting at an apartment on Hazlett Street in Pittsburgh’s Northview Heights community.
