PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University remained under lockdown into Sunday as authorities continued investigating a serious incident on campus that resulted in two students passing away and several others being injured, according to university officials.

In a message to students, faculty, and staff, Brown University President Christina H. Paxson confirmed that all individuals affected by the incident were students, describing the day as deeply painful for the university community.

Law enforcement officials worked through the early morning hours to safely clear students from campus buildings. University leaders said the campus was advised to remain secured as police continued searching for the individual responsible, who had not yet been taken into custody.

“This remains an active police situation,” Paxson said. “The priority is keeping everyone on campus safe.”

Students were instructed to shelter in place and follow official alerts while police conducted systematic sweeps of university facilities. A significant law enforcement presence remained visible across the campus as the investigation continued.

University officials also provided updates on those injured. One student has been treated and released from the hospital. Among those still receiving medical care, six students were listed in critical but stable condition, one remained in critical condition, and one was reported to be in stable condition.

As a result of the incident, all examinations scheduled for Sunday were postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. University leaders said further academic guidance would be shared once conditions allow.

The university activated counseling and mental health support services for students, faculty, and staff, encouraging anyone affected to seek assistance. Officials emphasized the importance of compassion and mutual support during the difficult days ahead.

Paxson expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown across the campus community.

“I want to thank every member of our community for the care, kindness, and support being offered,” she said. “We will need one another as we begin to heal together.”

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the suspect or a possible motive and urged the public to rely on official updates rather than speculation. Law enforcement agencies are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.

This remains an active and developing situation.
