GULFPORT, Miss. — Authorities are investigating a violent home invasion in Gulfport that ended early Thursday morning with D’Angelo Murphy, 29, passing away after a woman acted to protect herself and another resident, according to the Gulfport Police Department.
Police said officers were called to a residence around 7 a.m. on December 11, 2025, after receiving reports of a man forcefully entering the home. When officers arrived, they found Murphy suffering from gunshot injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators said Murphy entered the residence while armed with a hammer and a knife. Inside were two women, both of whom had active protection orders against him at the time of the incident.
Authorities said one of the women sustained a knife-related injury during the encounter. The two were able to retreat and barricade themselves inside another room as the situation escalated.
Police reported that the woman who was not injured retrieved a firearm and fired at Murphy as he continued to pose an immediate threat. The shots struck him, ending the confrontation.
The Harrison County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Murphy’s identity.
Lt. Jason Ducré of the Gulfport Police Department said preliminary evidence indicates the women’s actions were taken in self-defense.
“At this point in the investigation, it appears the women acted to defend themselves,” Ducré said. “As with all incidents of this nature, the case remains under review.”
Police also confirmed Murphy had recently been released from jail. Harrison County jail records show he was arrested on October 10 on allegations connected to the kidnapping of one of the women involved. He was released on bond roughly 15 days later.
Authorities have not said how Murphy gained access to the home or whether previous violations of the protection orders had been reported before the incident.
The injured woman received medical treatment. Her condition has not been publicly detailed.
No charges have been filed related to the shooting at this time. The Gulfport Police Department said it will continue working with prosecutors and the coroner’s office as the investigation continues.
