In Loving Memory of Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr.
With profound sadness, we remember Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr., a 17-year-old student whose life was tragically cut short Wednesday morning in Gaffney, South Carolina. His passing has left classmates, educators, friends, neighbors, and the wider community facing a heartbreaking loss and mourning a young life filled with promise.
According to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler, Fair was fatally shot at approximately 6:49 a.m. on West Rutledge Avenue near the Granard Court apartments. The teenager had reportedly walked from his apartment, which was located across the street from the school bus stop, and was preparing to begin his journey to school when an encounter with another male suddenly changed everything.
Authorities said another male approached Fair, and a brief altercation occurred before Fair was shot. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but despite their efforts, the 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the location.
For a community preparing to begin an ordinary school day, the morning quickly became one marked by grief and disbelief. A place where students would normally gather, wait for transportation, and begin another day of classes instead became the scene of an unimaginable tragedy.
Fair was only 17 years old. At an age when young people are typically thinking about school, friendships, graduation, future careers, family, and the possibilities that lie ahead, his future was suddenly taken away. The loss of someone so young is especially painful because of all the moments he will never have the opportunity to experience.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have also left many questions unanswered. Surveillance footage from the school bus reportedly captured the suspected shooter leaving the area and getting into a waiting vehicle driven by another person shortly after the incident. Authorities have not publicly released additional information identifying the suspect or explained what may have led to the confrontation.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding Fair’s death.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Special Victims Unit, Department of Child Fatalities, was requested by the Gaffney Police Department to assist with the investigation. The unit handles cases involving the deaths of children under 18 when those deaths involve violence or occur under suspicious, unusual, unexpected, or unexplained circumstances.
As investigators work to determine what happened, Fair’s classmates and educators are left to process the loss of someone who should have had many more years ahead of him. Losing a student is a painful experience for any school community, but the circumstances surrounding Fair’s passing make the grief even more difficult to comprehend.
For those who knew him, his memory will be more than the circumstances of his final moments. He was a son, a friend, a classmate, a student, and a young person with a life that mattered. The details of how his life ended should never overshadow the fact that he was a person who had hopes, relationships, memories, and people who cared about him.
In the days ahead, family members, friends, classmates, teachers, and community members will undoubtedly lean on one another for strength. Grief can come in many forms—through tears, silence, memories, conversations, and moments when a familiar place suddenly feels different. For Fair’s loved ones, even ordinary moments may now carry the weight of his absence.
The school bus stop where students once gathered will forever be connected to the heartbreaking loss of a young life. Yet beyond the tragedy, may it also become a place where people remember Fair for the life he lived rather than simply the way he died.
There are no easy words that can make a family whole again after such a loss. There is no simple explanation for why a teenager who had so much life ahead of him is no longer here. In moments like these, the most meaningful thing a community can do is remember, support, and stand beside those who are grieving.
May Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr. be remembered for his youth, his individuality, his relationships, and the moments he shared with the people around him. May his family find strength during this unimaginable time, and may his classmates and educators find comfort in one another as they cope with his absence.
His life was far too short, but the memories he leaves behind will remain with those who knew and loved him.
Rest peacefully, Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr.
May your memory continue to live in the hearts of your family, friends, classmates, teachers, and everyone whose life you touched.
Gone too soon, remembered always, and never forgotten.
