According to authorities, emergency personnel from the Piedmont Police Department, Piedmont Fire Department, and Piedmont Rescue responded at approximately 5:15 a.m. to the 1700 block of the highway following reports of a serious head-on collision involving a Nissan Rogue SUV and a commercial semi-truck.

Preliminary investigators reported that the Nissan Rogue was traveling eastbound into Piedmont when, for reasons that remain under investigation, it crossed the center line into the westbound lane and collided head-on with the oncoming semi-truck. Despite the rapid response of emergency personnel, both occupants of the SUV were pronounced deceased at the scene by Coroner Pat Brown.
