In Loving Memory of Christine McWilliams and McKinley “McKelsey” McWilliams

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we remember and honor the lives of Christine McWilliams, 43, and her beloved daughter, McKinley “McKelsey” McWilliams, 13, whose lives were tragically cut short during a devastating act of violence in Rittman, Ohio, on the evening of Sunday, July 5. Their heartbreaking loss has left family, friends, classmates, neighbors, and the entire community mourning two beautiful lives taken far too soon.

According to authorities, officers responded at approximately 9:30 p.m. to a residence in the 90 block of Chippewa Trail after a 911 call reported a break-in and gunfire. As investigators pieced together the tragic events, they determined that Christine and young McKinley had been fatally shot before first responders arrived at the home.

The suspected gunman, identified as 38-year-old Brandon Fazekas, later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. During the emergency response, Rittman Police Sgt. Scott Ries was also tragically killed after officers came under immediate gunfire upon arriving at the scene. Four deputies from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office sustained injuries, while Wayne County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Vick was seriously wounded in the line of duty. The horrific incident claimed four lives and forever changed countless others.

Today, however, our hearts are centered on remembering Christine and McKinley—not for the tragedy that ended their lives, but for the love they shared, the memories they created, and the lasting impact they made on everyone fortunate enough to know them.

Christine was a devoted mother whose greatest joy was her daughter. The bond between a mother and her child is one of life’s most precious gifts, and those who knew Christine understood how deeply she loved McKinley. She worked tirelessly to provide guidance, comfort, and encouragement, always striving to give her daughter every opportunity to grow, dream, and flourish.

McKinley, affectionately known as “McKelsey” by those who loved her, was just 13 years old, standing at the beginning of a life filled with endless possibilities. She was a daughter, a friend, a classmate, and a young girl with dreams still waiting to unfold. Her smile, laughter, curiosity, and youthful spirit brought happiness to those around her, making her loss especially heartbreaking for everyone whose lives she touched.

The passing of both mother and daughter together is a sorrow that is difficult to comprehend. Families are meant to create memories across generations, celebrate milestones together, and build a future filled with hope. Instead, Christine and McKinley’s loved ones are left mourning dreams that will never be realized and moments that will never come.

Their absence leaves an immeasurable void that cannot be filled. Every shared meal, every family gathering, every birthday, holiday, and ordinary day will forever remind those who loved them of the beautiful presence they once brought into the world.

In times of unimaginable grief, communities often come together in extraordinary ways. Friends, neighbors, coworkers, classmates, and complete strangers have united to offer prayers, comfort, and unwavering support to everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. Their compassion serves as a reminder that even in humanity’s darkest moments, kindness and love continue to shine.

As the investigation continues and the community searches for healing, may the memories of Christine and McKinley remain stronger than the violence that took them. May they be remembered for their love, their warmth, and the countless lives they touched during their time on earth.

Our deepest condolences are extended to the McWilliams family, their friends, loved ones, classmates, and everyone mourning this unimaginable loss. We also remember the courage and sacrifice of Sgt. Scott Ries, whose life was lost while responding to protect others, and we pray for the full recovery of the wounded deputies and K-9 Vick.

Though Christine and McKinley’s earthly journey ended far too soon, their love for one another and the memories they created will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew them. Love does not end with loss—it endures through remembrance, compassion, and the stories that keep cherished lives alive.

May Christine McWilliams and McKinley “McKelsey” McWilliams rest together in eternal peace. Their lives will forever be remembered, their love forever cherished, and their memories forever carried in the hearts of those who loved them.

Rest in peace, Christine and McKinley. You will always be loved, forever missed, and never forgotten.
