The driver of the Ford Expedition, Kevin Lee Long, 52, of Iron Station, was airlifted to a Charlotte hospital with serious injuries. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has stated that the crash remains under investigation. Investigators have indicated that impairment is suspected to have been a contributing factor, and they expect any potential charges to be determined after the investigation is complete. During the response and investigation, NC 27 remained closed for several hours as troopers carefully documented the scene.
