With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the Lonedell and Franklin County community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Gage Cowin, 28, whose life was tragically cut short during a fatal shooting in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Gage’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His unexpected death has deeply affected not only his family and close friends but also the wider community, where many are struggling to come to terms with such a devastating loss. As loved ones grieve, they remember Gage for the moments he shared, the memories he created, and the impact he had on the lives of those around him.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were dispatched at approximately 1:16 a.m. after Franklin County Communications received a 911 call reporting that a person had been shot at a residence located in the 1000 block of Birch Drive in Lonedell. The caller also stated that the suspected shooter had fled the scene and that the victim appeared to be deceased.
As deputies responded, they discovered a gray 2012 Ford Focus overturned a short distance from the residence. During the investigation of the crash scene, deputies recovered a revolver-style handgun from inside the overturned vehicle. While securing the area, law enforcement officers encountered an adult male walking back toward the crashed vehicle. He was identified as the suspected shooter, taken into custody without incident, and transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.
At the residence, deputies found Gage suffering from injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. They immediately began lifesaving efforts while awaiting emergency medical personnel. Despite every attempt to save him, Gage was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators later learned from the reporting party that an argument had occurred between two roommates before the shooting. Authorities allege that the dispute escalated, ultimately resulting in Gage being fatally shot.
Following the investigation, Franklin County detectives consulted with the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The suspect, identified by authorities as 29-year-old Levi E. Taylor of Sullivan, was charged on no-bond warrants with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, and driving while intoxicated. The legal process is ongoing, and all charges remain allegations unless proven in court.
While investigators continue their work, the focus for Gage’s loved ones remains on remembering the person they knew beyond the tragedy. They remember a son, a family member, a friend, and someone whose life ended far too soon. His absence leaves countless cherished memories that will forever be carried in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
The loss of a young life is always especially painful. Gage’s passing serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly lives can change and how deeply acts of violence affect families and entire communities. In the days and weeks ahead, those closest to him will continue to lean on one another for strength as they navigate an unimaginable grief.
As family and friends gather to honor Gage’s memory, they celebrate the moments of joy, laughter, and kindness he brought into their lives. Though his years were far too few, the love he shared and the memories he leaves behind will never be forgotten.
