According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded to a shooting at a residence on the 3000 block of Quinby Drive on Saturday night. They found Jashawn suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately rendered aid before he was transported to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical staff, Jashawn sadly passed away shortly after midnight.

Court records state that Jashawn’s father, 35-year-old Deshawn Butler, fled the scene before officers arrived. Police said he later turned himself in at police headquarters on unrelated outstanding warrants. According to court documents, Deshawn told investigators he had been securing a firearm in a safe inside a bedroom but became distracted and stepped away without realizing the safe had been left open. Records state that moments later, a gunshot was heard, and he discovered that Jashawn had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deshawn Butler has since been charged with one count of felony child endangering. Those charges remain allegations, and the legal process is ongoing.
