With heavy hearts, we remember Stacy Chiddix, whose life was tragically lost on July 20, 2026, while courageously working to protect the home and property he cherished during the advancing Brewer Fire in Jefferson County, Oregon.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Stacy, 58, of Madras, was not out riding for recreation. He was doing what so many dedicated property owners do when disaster threatens—standing alongside his home, determined to defend the place that held a lifetime of memories. His unwavering commitment to protecting what he loved speaks volumes about the kind of person he was: devoted, hardworking, and deeply connected to his family, land, and community.

Authorities reported that while operating his personal ATV on steep terrain near the north end of the Brewer Fire, Stacy was ejected from the vehicle, which overturned and pinned him beneath it. Friends who were with him immediately rushed to his aid, freeing him from the ATV and beginning life-saving efforts while emergency assistance was requested.

Despite the tremendous challenges posed by the remote location, rugged terrain, and active wildfire conditions, emergency responders from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Jefferson County Fire & EMS reached the scene using off-road vehicles. Frontier 911 dispatchers coordinated the emergency response, directed rescue personnel into the area, placed Life Flight on standby, and prepared a nearby landing zone in the hope that air transport might be possible.

Sadly, despite the determined efforts of Stacy’s friends, first responders, dispatchers, firefighters, deputies, and emergency medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jason Pollock shared heartfelt words that captured the true nature of Stacy’s final moments. He emphasized that Stacy was not engaging in recreational activity but was making every effort to protect the home he loved. His actions reflected the determination and resilience that many wildfire-affected residents display when faced with unimaginable circumstances.

Stacy’s passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers that accompany wildfires—not only from the flames themselves but from the unpredictable and hazardous conditions surrounding them. His story is one of courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the place he called home.

As family, friends, neighbors, and the Madras community mourn this tremendous loss, they also celebrate the life of a man whose strength and commitment will not be forgotten.
