Laurel, Mississippi — The Laurel community is grieving the loss of Lela M. Matthews, 78, who passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025, at her residence. Born on Wednesday, September 3, 1947, in Bay Springs, Mississippi, Mrs. Matthews lived a life defined by faith, family, and service to those around her.

A Life Rooted in Faith

A lifelong member of First Pentecostal Church of Bay Springs, Mrs. Matthews’ Christian faith was a guiding light in her life. She actively participated in her church community, offering support, encouragement, and love to her fellow members. Her spiritual devotion inspired many and reflected the strength and compassion that characterized her life.

A Devoted Family Woman

Family was the center of Mrs. Matthews’ life. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She took pride in nurturing and supporting her family, ensuring their well-being and happiness throughout her life.

Mrs. Matthews is survived by her sons, Terry Parker and Larry M. Matthews, Jr., her daughter, Tammy Chisholm, her brother, Robert L. Williams, and her sister, Ann Mulhern. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Derek Parker, Jordan Parker, Wesley Williamson (Laura), Trace Matthews (Swayzie), Sierra Chisholm, Lara Matthews, Triniti Matthews, and Paislee Munn, as well as her great-grandchildren, Kylie Bush, Rayna Williamson, and Emmitt Williamson. Her extended family of nieces and nephews also mourn her passing and celebrate the love she shared.

Passions and Joys

Beyond her devotion to family and faith, Mrs. Matthews had a love for gardening. She enjoyed growing butterbeans, okra, tomatoes, and a variety of vegetables, often sharing her harvest with family and friends. She also found joy in observing birds, finding peace and happiness in the simple pleasures of life. Her home and garden reflected her nurturing spirit, patience, and care.

A Life Remembered

Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband, Larry M. Matthews, Sr., her son, Darrell Lee Matthews, her parents, Robert Quitman and Mildred Leona Williams, her brother, Jerry Williams, and her sister, Cheryl Stuart.

Her life was one of devotion, generosity, and unwavering love. Those who knew her recall her as a woman of strength and kindness, whose presence brought warmth and comfort to all she encountered. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched, especially her family, who carry forward her values, lessons, and love.

Funeral Arrangements

Graveside services for Mrs. Matthews are scheduled at First Pentecostal Church of Bay Springs Cemetery on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with Bro. John Bowen officiating. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Bay Springs is handling arrangements. Pallbearers will include Derek Parker, Wesley Williamson, Trace Matthews, Jamie Chisholm, Carlton Edwards, and Jerald Chisholm.

Lela M. Matthews’ life was one of love, faith, and dedication. She will be remembered fondly by her family, friends, and the Laurel community for her kindness, nurturing spirit, and the enduring impact she made on everyone around her.
