It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we remember and honor the life of Nykel Poole, affectionately known as “Brat Kel,” whose life was tragically cut short at just 19 years old following a fatal shooting in Gulfport, Mississippi. His untimely passing has left his family, friends, and the entire community devastated as they struggle to come to terms with such a heartbreaking loss.

According to the Gulfport Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, in the 2000 block of 32nd Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered three people suffering from gunshot wounds. Nykel was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward. Two other victims were transported to the hospital with critical injuries. One of the surviving victims has been identified as Kateria Moore, who remains hospitalized in critical condition, while the second surviving victim has not been publicly identified.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer stated that Nykel died from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. His sudden and tragic passing has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.

Following the investigation, the Gulfport Police Department arrested 34-year-old John Gaddis III. Detectives allege that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing narcotics-related dispute involving Gaddis and one of the victims. Authorities have charged Gaddis with one count of First-Degree Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault. He is being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $2 million bond as the case moves through the legal process. These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
