In Loving Memory of Corey Shetler
With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, and loved ones are mourning the tragic passing of 29-year-old Corey Shetler of Dillonvale, Ohio, whose life was taken far too soon following a serious vehicle crash in Smithfield Township, Jefferson County.
Corey’s passing has left behind an overwhelming sense of sorrow for everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. At just 29 years old, he had so much life still ahead of him, so many moments yet to experience, and so many memories still waiting to be made. His unexpected passing is a painful reminder of how quickly life can change and how deeply one person can be missed when they are suddenly gone.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Steubenville Post, the crash happened at approximately 8:22 p.m. Sunday on County Road 10, approximately 0.2 miles west of State Route 152 in Jefferson County.
Corey was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision. Despite the efforts that followed the crash, the injuries he sustained were fatal. Authorities reported that Corey was pronounced deceased at approximately 9:38 p.m.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
Investigators reported that the crash involved a Chevrolet Cavalier traveling westbound on County Road 10 as it approached a right-hand curve and a Chevrolet Silverado traveling eastbound.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Silverado failed to successfully negotiate a left-hand curve. The pickup truck traveled off the right side of the roadway before the driver overcorrected. The Silverado then crossed the centerline and entered the path of the westbound Cavalier.
The right side of the Silverado struck the right-front portion of the Cavalier, resulting in a devastating collision.
Following the impact, the Silverado continued off the left side of the roadway and entered a ditch, where it eventually came to rest facing west. The Cavalier remained in the westbound lane and came to rest partially off the right side of the roadway.
Authorities identified alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash, while the investigation continues as officials work to determine the complete circumstances surrounding what happened.
Behind the details of any investigation is a human life, and for Corey’s family and friends, the most important part of this tragedy is the person they have lost.
Corey Shetler was more than a name in a crash report. He was a son, a loved one, a friend, and a member of his community. He was someone whose presence mattered to the people around him. His life was made up of relationships, conversations, shared experiences, laughter, ordinary days, and meaningful memories that will now become treasured reminders of the time those who loved him were fortunate enough to have with him.
The suddenness of Corey’s passing makes the grief even more difficult to comprehend. There was no opportunity for those closest to him to prepare for a goodbye. One moment, life was continuing as it always had; the next, a family was faced with an unimaginable loss.
For those who loved Corey, the days ahead may bring a mixture of sadness, disbelief, anger, questions, and memories. Grief does not follow a schedule, and there is no single way to mourn someone who meant so much. Some days may feel heavier than others. Memories may bring both tears and smiles. A familiar place, a photograph, a song, or a simple reminder can suddenly bring someone back into our thoughts.
Those memories are part of the legacy Corey leaves behind.
Although his life was far too short, the impact he had on others does not end with his passing. The moments he shared with family and friends will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. The stories people tell about him, the photographs they hold onto, and the memories created during his 29 years will remain meaningful in the days and years ahead.
The crash also brought together numerous emergency agencies and first responders who worked at the scene. Responding agencies included Smithfield Township Fire/EMS/Police Department, Wells Township Police Department, Brilliant Fire/EMS, Dillonvale Fire/EMS, Mt. Pleasant Fire/EMS, Short Creek Fire/EMS, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio Investigative Unit.
Their response reflects the efforts of the emergency personnel who routinely answer calls during some of the most difficult moments imaginable. Their work at the scene was an important part of the response to this heartbreaking incident.
As investigators continue their work, Corey’s loved ones are left to face a future they never expected to have without him.
There are no perfect words to ease the pain of losing someone unexpectedly. Sympathy, prayers, and condolences cannot erase the emptiness that follows such a loss. But remembering Corey keeps his life from being reduced to the circumstances of his passing.
He should be remembered for the life he lived, the people he loved, and the memories he created.
At only 29, Corey still had dreams to pursue, places to see, experiences to share, and moments to live. His family and friends will undoubtedly think about all the things he should have had the opportunity to experience. Those unfinished chapters are among the most painful parts of an unexpected loss.
Yet alongside the sadness, there is also gratitude: gratitude for the time Corey was here, for the memories he gave to others, and for the people whose lives were made better simply because he was part of them.
As the community mourns, may Corey’s family and loved ones find strength in one another. May they be surrounded by compassion and support during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the memories that cannot be taken away and in the knowledge that Corey’s life mattered.
May every story shared about him, every photograph remembered, and every quiet moment spent thinking of him serve as a reminder that his presence made a difference.
The road ahead will not be easy for those closest to Corey. Grief may remain for a long time, but so will love. And when someone is deeply loved, their memory can continue to provide comfort even after they are gone.
Today, we remember Corey Shetler, a 29-year-old from Dillonvale whose life ended far too soon.
May he be remembered not simply for the tragic circumstances that took him from this world, but for the person he was and the place he held in the hearts of those who knew him.
May Corey Shetler rest in peace.
May his family, friends, and everyone who loved him find comfort, strength, and peace in the memories they shared with him.
Gone from sight, but never forgotten.
Gone from this world, but forever remembered.
Forever loved, forever missed, and forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
Rest peacefully, Corey. Your life mattered, your memory will endure, and you will never be forgotten.
