Clayton, N.C. — A tragic incident unfolded Friday evening at Cobbler’s Station apartments, where a 12-year-old boy passed away after sustaining serious injuries inside a crowded apartment. The community is reeling from the loss, and authorities are actively searching for Ty’ryn Anthony Zah’rel Washington, 20, of Kenly, who is wanted on a manslaughter warrant in connection with the case. Washington remains at large.
Clayton Police responded to a report of a disturbance in the 300 block of Commodore Street around 5:30 p.m. As officers arrived, residents fled an apartment in the 400 block, alerting police that someone had been injured. Inside, officers discovered the young boy with critical injuries. Emergency responders from Johnston County EMS transported him to a nearby hospital, where he tragically passed away.
Witnesses told police that between twenty and thirty people were inside the apartment at the time of the incident. According to initial reports, the injury occurred accidentally during a scramble when some individuals attempted to secure weapons as officers arrived. Investigators determined that Washington had possession of the firearm when it discharged. After consultation with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, police obtained a manslaughter warrant for Washington, who fled the scene and remains wanted.
