The Beaumont community is mourning the loss of 38-year-old Justin Balka, whose life was tragically cut short following a hit-and-run auto-pedestrian crash on Washington Boulevard.

According to the Beaumont Police Department, the heartbreaking incident happened Friday evening at approximately 8:40 p.m. in the 2900 block of Washington Boulevard, between 4th and 5th Street. Police officers were dispatched to the area after receiving a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.

When officers arrived, they found a man lying unresponsive in the roadway. Beaumont EMS responded and provided assistance, but sadly, Justin had already passed away.

Police say preliminary findings indicate that Justin was attempting to cross Washington Boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle. Rather than stopping to assist or remaining at the scene, the driver continued away from the area, leaving Justin behind.

The circumstances surrounding those final moments have left many people with questions and a community grieving the loss of a life that mattered deeply to family, friends and those who knew him.

The scene was closed while investigators worked to document what had happened. Police placed yellow crime-scene tape around portions of the roadway as they gathered evidence and examined the circumstances surrounding the collision. Local media was also present as investigators worked at the scene.

The Beaumont Police Department’s Traffic Unit is leading the investigation. Authorities continue working to determine exactly what happened and identify the vehicle and driver involved. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have indicated that additional information may be released as it becomes available.

For Justin’s loved ones, however, the investigation is only one part of a much greater loss. Behind the name released in a police report was a person with a life, memories, relationships and a place within the lives of others.
